What is Suboxone®?

Suboxone®, also known as buprenorphine, is a medication used to treat opioid addiction by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms without causing a high. It is considered effective for opioid dependence. However, recent concerns have arisen about a link between Suboxone®, specifically sublingual strips, and dental issues like severe tooth decay. These issues may result from the medication's acidic nature, causing enamel erosion, or side effects like dry mouth, which reduces saliva that protects teeth. This connection has led to numerous lawsuits against the manufacturer, alleging failure to warn users of these potential dental risks.

The FDA's Findings

The FDA discovered 305 instances of dental issues linked to mouth-dissolving buprenorphine drugs, with 131 being severe. These were either reported to the FDA or noted in medical studies, but there could be more unreported cases. The average patient age was 42, with some as young as 18 affected. The majority used the medicine for opioid use disorder (OUD), but 28 cases involved pain treatment. Interestingly, 26 individuals had no previous dental problems. Some experienced dental issues within two weeks of starting treatment, typically diagnosed around two years later. Health professionals often reported these cases, highlighting extensive dental damage. In 113 cases, multiple teeth were impacted, and the most frequent remedy was tooth extraction (71 cases). Other treatments included root canals, dental surgery, crowns, and implants.

The FDA's Recommendations

Patients prescribed buprenorphine should continue their medication as directed and avoid abrupt cessation without medical consultation to prevent withdrawal or relapse. To minimize dental risks associated with dissolvable buprenorphine, patients are advised to rinse their mouth with water after use and delay brushing for an hour. Regular dental check-ups and proactive communication with healthcare providers are essential for managing potential oral health issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Suboxone® and how is it linked to tooth decay?

Suboxone® is a medication commonly used to treat opioid addiction and it is typically taken sublingually (under the tongue). Recent studies have shown a correlation between Suboxone® use and an increased risk of dental issues such as tooth decay, dry mouth, and gum disease. The medication's formulation can reduce saliva production, which is vital for neutralizing acids in the mouth and preventing decay.

What should I do if I suspect Suboxone® has affected my dental health?

If you have been taking Suboxone® and are experiencing dental problems, it is important to first consult with your dentist to assess any damage. Documenting your dental health status is crucial. Then, contact a legal expert who specializes in medical-related cases. At BBB Attorneys, we can provide a free consultation to discuss your situation and determine if you are eligible for compensation.

Can I be compensated for dental issues caused by Suboxone®?

Yes, if it is determined that your dental issues are a direct result of Suboxone® use, you may be entitled to compensation. This can include costs for dental treatment, pain and suffering, and any related expenses. At BBB Attorneys, we have helped many patients navigate these cases successfully, and we can offer a thorough review of your case to help protect your rights and interests.

Why People Are Filing

People are filing legal claims against Suboxone® because its use has been associated with significant dental issues, such as tooth decay, dry mouth, and gum disease, which often lead to costly and painful dental procedures. Affected patients are seeking compensation for their suffering, financial losses, and the unexpected burden of dental treatments. Legal action also highlights the need for clearer warnings and patient education regarding the potential side effects of this medication.
