Important Medical Information About Chemical Hair Straighteners

Written by Dr. Linares

The upcoming bullet points provide an overview of the medical considerations connected to chemical hair straighteners. While in recent years these products have been popular for their hair-transforming abilities, they have also come under scrutiny due to concerns about potential long-term health effects.

Hair relaxers often contain several substances, including phthalates and parabens, which are compounds that cause a hormone disbalance in the body), and may also contain formaldehyde which is classified as a carcinogen.

When heated, formaldehyde is released into the air in the form of a colorless gas that has a very strong odor.

Hair relaxers chemicals can get absorbed into the body through direct skin contact, by breathing the gases released during the straightening process, and from the lesions and burns that these chemicals commonly cause on the scalp.

Hair relaxers fall under the category of “cosmetics”, and manufacturers are not legally required to list all the ingredients contained in the product and are not subject to premarket approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Studies found that hair relaxers are most frequently used by African American women (approximately 75%) when compared to White women (around 3%).

Chronic exposure to formaldehyde and other common ingredients found in hair relaxers, including endocrine disruptors and other potential carcinogens, may increase the risk of developing some types of cancer.

Frequent use (more than 4 times per year) of these products increased the risk of ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.
