Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement?

The DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement is a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing device. The device is intended to provide an alternative to total hip replacement for patients with early stage hip arthritis and has been used in Europe since 1997. In September 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. 510(k) clearance to market the Pinnacle Hip Resurfacing System in the United States. The Pinnacle hip resurfacing system consists of a metal femoral cap that is placed over the rounded top of the thigh bone (femoral head) and a metal shell with a liner that is fitted into the hip socket (acetabulum). The liner may be made of metal, plastic or ceramic.

  • What are the potential side effects of the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement?

The most common side effects associated with the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement are local tissue reactions, such as pain and swelling at the site of the implant. Other potential side effects include infection, loosening or instability of the implant, dislocation of the implant, and fractures. In addition, because the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement is a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing device, there is also the potential for metallosis (wear debris) to occur. Metallosis is a condition that can occur when small particles of metal wear off of the implant and enter into the surrounding tissue. Symptoms of metallosis include pain, swelling, and inflammation. In severe cases, metallosis can lead to joint failure and the need for revision surgery.

  • Who is filing DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement lawsuits?

Patients who have experienced complications following hip resurfacing surgery with the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement device have begun filing lawsuits against the device's manufacturer, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc.

  • What are the allegations in the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement lawsuits?

The lawsuits allege that DePuy Orthopaedics failed to warn patients and surgeons of the potential risks associated with the use of the device and that the company knew or should have known of the potential for complications. In addition, the lawsuits allege that DePuy Orthopaedics misrepresented the safety and effectiveness of the device. If you have experienced complications following hip resurfacing surgery with the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement device, you may be entitled to compensation.

WHY PEOPLE ARE FILING

DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, released the Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip replacement devices in 2000. The device was intended to be a more durable alternative to traditional hip replacements, which typically last about 15 years. However, reports began emerging soon after the device was released that it was causing serious complications in some patients, including metallosis (metal poisoning), tissue death, bone loss and dislocation. In August 2010, DePuy issued a voluntary recall of the Pinnacle devices after data from a study showed that about two out of every five patients who received the device needed revision surgery within five years.

Patients who have experienced complications after receiving a DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement device have filed lawsuits against the company, alleging that the device is defective, causes a number of serious health consequences, and that DePuy failed to warn patients of the risks associated with it despite knowing about it. If you or a loved one has been injured by a DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement device, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Fortunately, BBB Attorneys is here to ensure you get the justice you deserve and that the company responsible for your injuries is held accountable.
