WHY PEOPLE ARE FILING
Cook IVC filters, specifically the Gunther Tulip and Celect filters, were created to protect patients who are at risk for a pulmonary embolism and minimize the risk of blood clots. Surgeons placed these filters into the inferior vena cava of each patient's heart. The Gunther Tulip filter was approved by the FDA in 2003, and the Celect filter was approved in 2008. However, since 2015, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Cook Medical because these devices have been known to perforate in as little as 71 days, causing serious health complications. These include deep vein thrombosis, hemorrhaging, organ damage, pulmonary embolisms, and in some instances, even death.
